A boiler service isn’t just a box-ticking job - it’s what keeps your heating running safely, efficiently, and without surprise breakdowns.

It’s easy to put it off (we get it), but knowing what actually happens during a service makes it a lot clearer why it matters. In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly what we check, what we look out for, and how it all helps keep your boiler in good shape for the long run.

Why Boiler Servicing Matters

Your boiler works quietly in the background every day - heating your home, running your hot water, doing its thing. But like anything that gets used a lot, it needs a bit of upkeep to keep it running properly.

A yearly service helps to:

  • Pick up small issues early (before they turn into expensive problems)

  • Keep everything running efficiently — which can help keep energy bills down

  • Make sure your boiler is working safely, including checks for things like carbon monoxide

  • Help extend the life of the boiler, so you’re not replacing it sooner than you need to

Skipping a service might not seem like a big deal… until something goes wrong. That’s when you’re looking at unexpected breakdowns, bigger repair costs, and a lot more hassle than a simple check would’ve been.

Step 1: Initial Safety Checks

First things first - we make sure everything’s safe before getting stuck in.

At the start of the service, we’ll:

  • Safely turn the boiler off and isolate it

  • Have a good look around for any signs of leaks, damage, or anything out of the ordinary

  • Check the pressure is sitting where it should be

  • Inspect the flue and ventilation to make sure everything’s clear and safe

It’s all about making sure your boiler is in a safe condition to work on - and that everything’s operating as it should before we go any further.

Step 2: Cleaning the Boiler

Once everything’s safe, we get inside the boiler and give it a proper clean - because over time, bits of dirt and debris can build up and start affecting how well it runs.

During this part, we’ll:

  • Remove the casing to access the key components

  • Clean parts like the burner, heat exchanger, and combustion chamber

  • Clear out any build-up that could be affecting performance

A clean boiler is a more efficient boiler - it helps everything run smoothly, reduces strain on parts, and lowers the risk of overheating or long-term damage.

Step 3: Inspecting and Testing Components

Next, we go through the main working parts of the boiler to make sure everything’s doing what it should - and nothing’s on its way out.

We’ll check things like:

  • The burner and ignition to make sure it’s lighting properly and burning cleanly

  • The heat exchanger for any signs of wear, cracks, or corrosion

  • The pump and valves to ensure they’re working smoothly (and not making any odd noises)

  • The thermostat and controls to make sure they’re responding properly

  • The pressure relief valve to confirm it’s operating safely

If anything doesn’t look quite right, we’ll flag it and talk you through the next steps - no surprises, just clear advice so you can decide what you want to do.

Step 4: Checking Gas Pressure and Combustion

This is one of the most important parts of the service - making sure your boiler is burning gas safely and efficiently.

Here, we’ll:

  • Use specialist equipment to analyse the gases coming from the flue

  • Check levels like carbon monoxide to make sure everything’s safe

  • Adjust the gas pressure if needed so the boiler is running at the right balance

  • Make sure it’s burning cleanly and not wasting fuel

It’s a key safety check, but it also helps your boiler run more efficiently - which is better for both your home and your energy bills.

Step 5: Testing the System Operation

Once everything’s been cleaned and checked, we fire the boiler back up and make sure it’s running exactly as it should.

At this stage, we’ll:

  • Watch how it ignites and check the flame is stable

  • Monitor temperature and pressure while it’s running

  • Listen out for any unusual noises or vibrations

  • Make sure it’s responding properly to your thermostat

It’s the final check to confirm everything’s working smoothly - so you can rely on your heating and hot water without any surprises.

Step 6: Providing a Service Report

Once everything’s done, we’ll give you a clear breakdown of what we’ve checked and how your boiler’s looking.

This includes:

  • What we’ve inspected and cleaned

  • Any issues we’ve spotted (and what we’d recommend next)

  • Confirmation everything’s running safely and as it should

  • Simple advice to help keep things running smoothly going forward

No jargon, no guesswork - just a straightforward summary so you know exactly where you stand and can plan ahead if needed.
